Our history in Rocky Point began as summer residents in 1957, in 1980 we moved there permanently, but eventually moved away in 1988. The Drive-In was a memorable part of those years. My earliest recollections of a night at the Drive-in began with the preparation. The car windshield was cleaned and polished to near invisable, the better to see the screen. A gallon jug of Kool-Aid was mixed with plenty of ice, stacks of Dixie cups and napkins packed. Candy purchased at the drugstore earlier that day was stowed in the car also, sometimes popcorn was popped, especially if money was tight preventing a trip to the concession stand. Lawn chairs were taken along, to watch the movie in the cool night air, instead a stuffy car. We could hardly wait for it to get dark enough to go, wanting to get there with ample time to visit the playground, and concession stand if funds allowed. Sometimes especially on opening night or weekends a line of cars would back-up onto 25A, and we would get anxious, lest we got in after the 1st movie started, those already parked did not appreciate a tardy patron! Sometimes if we were lucky and had a little extra money to spare we were allowed a treat for the 2nd feature, my favorite was an eggroll and a Yoohoo. Some nights the sky to the left of the screen was as big of an attraction as the movie for shooting stars could be seen in great numbers.
There was also a indoor Cinema in Rocky Point for a few years during the late 70's early 80's. Located quite close to the Drive-in, in a strip mall just east of North Country Rd. It was a small theater with one screen, very basic, non-descript functional as typical of the era. I can only remeber going to it one time in its inaugural year. Within a year or two it changed its venue to X-Rated films only, and while my friends and I dared each other to go we never did. It eventually closed and the space became a series of resturants over the years.
